Ըստ կանխատեսումների՝ ջրի համաշխարհային պահանջարկը մինչև 2050թ․ կաճի 55 տոկոսով։ Այնինչ, այսօր էլ շուրջ 2 միլիարդ մարդ խմելու անվտանգ ջուր չունի: Երկրագնդի բնակչության գրեթե կեսը՝ 3․6 միլիարդ մարդ, զուրկ է պատշաճ սանիտարական պայմաններից, կենցաղային կեղտաջրերի 44 տոկոսը անվտանգ մաքրման չի ենթարկվում:
Մարտի 22-ը Ջրային պաշարների համաշխարհային օրն է, առիթ՝ վերաարժևորելու ջրի կարևորությունը մարդու և ամբողջ երկրագնդի համար, նաև՝ հասարակության ուշադրությունը հրավիրելու ջրային խնդիրներին։ Առաջին հերթին՝ վերականգնել պաշարները, պահպանել ու խնայել, ապահովել խմելու որակյալ ջրի կայուն մատակարարում։
Մեր երկիրը ևս զերծ չէ ջրային խնդիրներից, և դրանց լուծման ճանապարհին կարևոր ներդրում ունի նաև Հայաստանի տարածքային զարգացման հիմնադրամը։ Մասնավորապես, հիմնադրամի մի շարք ծրագրեր ուղղված են խմելու և ոռոգման ջրերի համակարգերի արդիականացմանը, ջրահեռացման բարելավմանը, ինչպես նաև կառուցվում է ռազմավարական նշանակության երկու ջրամբար։
